Activity Description

SERVE at Home is a way for your family to spread kindness and help our community on your own, anytime, anywhere!

For this activity, you will work with your family at home to decide what food you would like to donate to the ATX Free Fridge Project to give to our neighbors in need. Then you can find unexpired items you have on hand or go shopping together.

You will need to provide the supplies for this activity. You can complete this activity on your own anytime during the month.

Activity Directions

If you’re going grocery shopping, the following items are the most helpful to donate:

  • Water bottles (both disposable and reusable)
  • Granola bars (include allergen and dietary needs)
  • Applesauce cups (include sugar free)
  • Lunchables
  • Pop-top canned food
  • Pouches of tuna/cooked, ready to eat proteins
  • Individually wrapped servings of breads/pastries
  • String cheese
  • Fruit cups
  • Hydration packets/tablets
  • Rice
  • Beans
  • Seasonings
  • Apples, oranges & bananas
  • Pasta and sauce
  • Boxed mac & cheese
  • Prepared meals/salads
  • Individual packs of peanut butter, hummus and/or nuts
  • Individual bags of carrots/celery/other veggies
  • Individual-sized sanitary and hygiene products such as shampoo, lotion, soap, etc.
  • Pads, tampons, wet wipes, toothpaste, toothbrushes

Once you have items ready to donate, your family can drop off your items together at one of the ATX Free Fridges. To find a current ATX Free Fridge location, please visit their website for the most up to date list of fridge locations. *Note: The Dittmar location (618 W Dittmar Rd) may still appear on the map, but the fridge is no longer active. Please use the map to find an alternative location.

ATX Free Fridge Community Guidelines:

  • Sanitize your hands before opening the fridge and wear a mask the whole time you interact with a fridge.
  • Place all perishables in the fridge and non-perishables in the pantry.
  • No RAW meat please!
  • Please do not leave anything on the ground.
  • Only donate food that isn't expired or opened.
  • While volunteers come to check on the fridge frequently, please do your best to keep the surrounding area clean and organized.
  • Please do not donate/leave alcohol.
  • When donating prepared meals/baked goods/homemade food - wear a mask and gloves while preparing the food; use clean, sturdy containers that completely seal; and label each item with the name of the dish, ingredients & allergens and the date it was made.
  • No room in the fridge or pantry? Check out the other locations!

SERVE at Home Activity Format Information

Our SERVE at Home activities are a way for your family to spread kindness and help our community at a time that suits your busy schedule! If you are new to this format of service, be sure to read all the details in the link before you RSVP. SERVE at Home activities are usually listed on our calendar at the end of each month, and they should be completed at your family's convenience during that month unless a more specific deadline is outlined in the activity requirements.

Once your family gets started, be sure to take pictures as your family works together on this project so we can certify your submission when you are done. The photos submitted should clearly demonstrate all volunteer’s engagement in the specified SERVE at Home activity and should not be reused at any time.

After you RSVP, we will send you a confirmation email that includes a link to our SERVE at Home form for submission of the photos and information needed to cerifty that your family has completed this activity. This form must be submitted within 7 days of this calendar listing to earn service hours credit in our system, and submissions received after the deadline will not be accepted. SERVE at Home hours are entered manually and often take to 2-3 weeks for process.
